History of The H.O.P.E. Project

history (1998-2011):

The H.O.P.E. Project was established in 1998 and became operational in January of 2000 with the 36’ft mobile mammography vehicle. Since its inception, The H.O.P.E. Project has continued to increase the facilities served and the amount of underserved and uninsured women that we are able to reach. The H.O.P.E. Project provides free and low-cost mammography to the underserved and uninsured women of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Because The H.O.P.E. Project does not do self-referred patients, we provide a comprehensive program by working with health care facilities that provide a clinical breast exam. The H.O.P.E. Project will then provide breast health education and the screening mammogram either free to those who qualify and low-cost to those who do not qualify for the free services.

The Quantum Foundation, Susan G Komen for the Cure and The American Cancer Society were the original collaborators to The H.O.P.E. Project and have provided not only funding for the bus and operation, but guidance for the formation of the program. In 2011, we can proudly report that we have served nearly 20,000 women in our communities. This is very significant, because when we began operations, we were reaching about 600 women per year. At this time, we are serving over 2000 women per year and that number does continue to grow every year.

Our collaborators have continued to provide support for our organization on an ongoing basis. Susan G Komen for the Cure continues to provide a grant to The H.O.P.E. Project for the free mammograms to those who qualify. The American Cancer Society continues to provide our office space in-kind and additionally have provided The H.O.P.E. Project with grants for education. The Quantum Foundation has continued funding since our inception. In 2009, Quantum provided a grant to partially fund our conversion from analog mammography to full-field digital mammography. In July of 2009, The H.O.P.E. Project completed the conversion to digital technology..  At this time, we are the only digital mobile mammography bus in South Florida and the Treasure Coast to exclusively provide free and low-cost digital screening mammography to the uninsured and underserved.   On our Mission page, you can see additional major Funders of TheH.O.P.E.
